[WaSai] How to Make a Cake in 10 Minutes!
We were driving around in the Cupertino area today. Realizing that our fridge is starting to run low on food, we decided to stop by a nearby Japanese supermarket, Marukai. While shopping we came across a cute pink little box that caught our attention.
The item is an instant cake mix made by Morinaga, the company that made our favorite childhood candy such as the milk caramel and Hi-Chew. The cake is coined as Range Up Cake Mix.
The Range Up Cake can be simply described as a cake that you cook with the microwave oven. It is designed for the stereotypical live alone Japanese high school/college students, and as well as busy single downtown workers (this market group is also the main reason why microwavable food is very popular in Japan). Must of the ingredients are already in the box, the ones that are not are typical stable food that can be found around an average house.
Without caring for making the cake look fancy, such as coating it with whip cream or powdered sugar, all you need is the cake mix in the box, an egg, and some type of milk, in our case we used almond milk.
1) First you add the egg and the milk into the mixing bow provided with the box with some type of fork. You only need one egg and about 2 table spoon of milk (this is assuming that you use normal milk). With almond milk or soy milk you might need slightly more. From experience, if you don't mind to have a taste of almond in your chocolate cake, it is probably better to use soy milk.
2) Add in the cake powder and mix for about 3 minutes. Afterwards the air bubble in the mix will need to be removed and the batter need to be evenly spread out, in order to do that, gently knock the container against a flat surface.
3) Finally, just place the cake (with the container) into the microwave for about 3 minutes (depending on the wattage of your microwave). Once its done, just remove the cake from the container and enjoy!
We ended up decided to top off the cake with a strawberry to make the whole experience taste sooo much better. Strawberry and Chocolate is a perfect couple :)
